However unlikely it may be, the tale of the Tempur-Pedic mattress starts at NASA – the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Sometime in the Sixties, engineers worked on creating a material to help minimize effects of the G-force astronauts must endure. The name they gave to this elastic material was “temper foam”.

Since NASA never put the material to use they decided to release the formula so various private companies could use it in their products. Unfortunately, at this time the process for developing the foam was not complete, making it impractical and hard to produce.

There was however, a group of scientists at Fagerdala World Foams in Sweden that saw how it could be a great material for mattresses. These scientists spent many years and a lot of money to develop a new and improved sleep surface. The material that they ended up with was temperature sensitive so they called it “TEMPUR” and later went on to patent it.

It’s a fairly complicated process to produce a Tempur-pedic mattress. You must integrate several layers of memory foam with various materials found in other mattresses. The end result of this is a comfortable bed which has the proper support often lacking in a traditional coiled spring mattress.

How can this be done? It starts with the top layer or comfort layer that has a softer TEMPUR material designed to adjust to your unique body shape. It conforms to your size and weight. After lying down you sink further into the second layer which is the support layer. It absorbs your weight and redistributes it evenly over the surface of the bed.

After the support layer, there is the final layer that will provide a reliable foundation for the mattress. This base layer however, is usually not made of memory foam. Less costly polyurethane foam with a very high density is better suited here.

The biggest difference between a Tempur-Pedic mattress and all the others is that they’re specifically designed to respond to changes in both weight and temperature. This means it can be either soft or firm depending what you need. The material can actually conform to your unique body dimensions, which gives you necessary support in the right places. These mattresses are especially helpful for people with back and neck problems, as study after study has confirmed.

A regular mattress will not evenly distribute a person’s weight. That’s why sagging happens in the place where an individual normally lays on it. This continuous pressure on the same spot wears down the padding and will ultimately stop supporting you properly. Most of the time these problems happen in the areas of the lower back or hips, which causes the spine to be in an unnatural position.

Another advantage with a Tempur-Pedic mattress is that they’re nearly maintenance free. You don’t have to flip them or really do anything for them. They’ll never develop body impressions or start poking you with springs, which means they can last up to twice as long as an average mattress. In fact, the company currently offers a 20-year limited warranty on all of their mattresses. So, if you have a bad back, neck, poor circulation or just want a good mattress that will last you at least two decades, this may be the brand for you.

Keep in mind however, that a Tempur-Pedic mattress isn’t right for everybody. They’re quite different than any spring mattress and possibly will take time for adjustment. The vast majority of folks love them and give them a good report, but there are some who can’t get used to memory foam, causing them to switch back to a normal mattress. Some complaints are that the mattress is too firm, retains a lot of heat, or smells bad.

However, if you look closely at Tempur-Pedic mattress reviews you will see these problems are rare. If you’re a person who has difficulty sleeping, and are waking up with painful joints, then it’s certainly worth giving one a try.
