Ugg Boots

The Ugg Boot or just Uggs is a common term for a sort of sheepskin boot which has been produced in Australia and New Zealand for virtually two hundred years. In the beginning, the were known as ‘Ug or Ugh Boots’ which is short for ‘Ugly’. However an American importer (Koolaburra) presented the idea that the name Ugg comes from the way the boot ‘hugs’ the wearer’s foot and legs. However, due to trademark issues, Uggs are far more frequently than not known in the retail market simply as Sheepskin Boots.

Originally, in Australia and New Zealand this cushy and warm footwear was being worn by social groups like Bogans, Westies and Bevans in public. However, most other Australians would only wear them around the house or at the most just on a visit to the local store. The boots definitely became trendy during the 1960’s with surfers and competitive swimmers as they kept them warm while out of the water.

It is believed that many popular Australian actors/actresses have likely being wearing Ugg Boot in private for some time, it was only when Pamela Anderson started wearing a pair that she had bought in Australia to help keep her legs warm in between sessions in filming the popular television show Baywatch, that it is thought people in the United States started to get excited about these boots.

Since 2003 the Ugg Boot has become very trendy in America because of the marketing of the product by an American Company called Ugg Australia (a division of the Deckers outdoor firm ). The Ugg Australia Brand was made by Brian Smith who commenced importing to the States in the late 1970’s. He then sold the company to Deckers outside in 1995. Actresses such as Kate Hudson (pictured wearing them on a poster for Raising Helen in 2004 ) and Sienna Miller appear to have increased their popularity. This style of shoes has now become a major product in most fashionable shops and shoes stores across the globe. Actually some of the more popular brands available are the Emu, Koolaburra, UGG and Warmbat.

However, in Canada it was discovered the Ugg boots
has become extremely well liked by University student in Canada as well as on many US campuses.

Though these boots are available worldwide typically in sizes that fit both ladies and men, and the styles available are almost identical it appears more women than men are at present wearing them, particularly in the US. Because of this colours like lavender, pink and pastels have been introduced which specifically target the female market.

However , there were a number of issues that have arisen over the trademark of the Ugg Boot and for some considerable time the trademark ‘ugh-boot’ was owned by the Deckers out of doors enterprise in Australia and because of their also holding additional international trademarks in relation to the product they were able to limit the term’s use in Australia and because of this they were able to successful sue other Ugg Importers (Koolaburra most notably) for using the term.

Thanks to the US trademark laws you will find that many Australian and US manufacturers who produce this style of footwear are now promoting them as ‘Sheepskin Boots’ instead of ‘Ugg Boots’.

But in January 2006 the owners of Uggs-N-Rugs ( Australia ) were able to have the Deckers outdoor firms Australian Trademark for Ugh-boot removed from the Australian Trademarks Registry. This resulted in the decision the words ‘Ug Boots’,'Ugg Boots’ and ‘Ugh Boots’ might be interchangeable and were a generic term for ‘Sheepskin Boots’. However , there was a giant amount of controversy over this matter as many Australians and New Zealanders were opposed to having ‘Ugg Boots’ trademarked.
